Why Tajweed matters

The Quran was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to his companions by mouth, sound by sound, and it has been passed on the same way ever since. Tajweed is the name for that careful way of reciting. Small slips, such as a heavy letter read light or a long vowel cut short, can change how a word sounds and sometimes what it means. Learning Tajweed protects your recitation, makes your Salah more confident and lets you enjoy the rhythm of the Quran.

Many students in the US and UK learned to read as children but never had anyone correct them closely. Others can recite a few surahs from memory but are unsure of the rules. A live teacher listening to you one-on-one is the fastest way to fix both.

What you will learn

  1. Makharij (articulation points): where each Arabic letter is produced, from the throat, tongue, lips and nasal passage, with lots of listening and repeating.
  2. Sifat (characteristics): heavy and light letters (tafkheem and tarqeeq), whispered and voiced letters, and the echo of qalqalah.
  3. Noon sakinah and tanween: izhar, idgham, iqlab and ikhfa, practised in real verses rather than lists.
  4. Meem sakinah: ikhfa shafawi, idgham shafawi and izhar shafawi.
  5. Madd (lengthening): natural madd and the longer types, and how many counts each one takes.
  6. Waqf and ibtida: where to pause, where not to, and how to start again so that the meaning stays whole.
  7. Applied recitation: reading from Juz Amma and beyond with your teacher correcting in real time.

Lessons follow the widely recited riwayah of Hafs from Asim. Students who already know the theory can skip straight to applied recitation and polishing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know Arabic to learn Tajweed?

No. You need to be able to read Arabic letters with vowel marks. If you cannot yet, we start with Noorani Qaida and move to Tajweed once you are reading.

Can kids join the Tajweed course?

Yes. Children usually begin Tajweed once they can read from the Mushaf. Rules are taught through examples, repetition and short practice tasks rather than heavy theory.

Which riwayah do you teach?

Classes follow Hafs from Asim, the recitation used in most printed Mushafs in the US, UK and much of the Muslim world.

How long does it take to learn Tajweed?

It depends on your starting level, how many classes you take each week and how much you practise between lessons. Your teacher will give you an honest estimate after the free trial.

Can I learn Tajweed with a female teacher?

Yes. Female Tajweed teachers are available for sisters and children. Choose your preference on the registration form.
