Zakat in Islam, in brief
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam: an obligatory charity on qualifying wealth held for a lunar year above a minimum threshold (nisab), generally 2.5% for savings, cash, gold and silver. The Quran names the eight groups who may receive it (9:60), including the poor and the needy. Zakat purifies wealth and builds a caring community.
Understanding zakat, prayer, fasting and Hajj, and why they matter, is part of a complete Islamic education. Our Islamic Studies classes teach children and adults these foundations clearly, with time for questions. For rulings on your own wealth, consult a qualified scholar.
